As mentioned before, Compound Claims are used several times throughout the day. My most recent encounter with a compound claim occurred this morning when my mom asked what would I eat for breakfast. I replied, " I will cook either pancakes and bacon or french toast and bacon for breakfast". My major claim was that I would cook breakfast. The compound part of the claim is that I would either be cooking pancakes and bacon or french toast and bacon.

Compound Claims
A concept that I found interesting in regards to Chapter 6 deals with compound claims. Compound claims are used many times throughout the day. A compound claim is a major claim with another claim in and of itself. For example, I will go to the store and buy a red shirt or a blue shirt. The major claim is that I will go to the store to buy a shirt. The compound claim is that the shirt will either be red or blue.

I think it’s funny because as I read everybody’s blogs I think about the simplicity of all of our examples. It isn’t just yours, it’s everybody’s, I just so happened to click on your blog first when this thought had came to me. But as simple as these examples are, such as your “going to the store to buy a red or blue shirt” example, it makes it that much easier to understand the concept. I mean, I read the text and I get it, but there are so many fluffy words that sometimes mislead me and I have to read it over. I like these examples because it summarized the concept of compound claims in a straightforward fashion. I’m going to the store. Main claim. Red or blue. Compound. Simple!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I have to agree Lass Rhapsodist that I compound claims are the most simplest concept in Chapter 6. Because it's an easy concept to follow, most of our classmates are using compound claims as their examples too. Your examples were quite good too because they were very easy to follow. We use compound claims everyday of our lives too like when we go to the grocery and have to choose between what food to buy or when you go to the conveience store to decide between clothes.
ReplyDeleteHey, i liked how you wrote a simple example to explain the concept of compound claims. it something that we use daily throughout our lives and we never really notice until we find out about it. while even simple tasks in our lives use compound claims we use them effectively to convey multiple claims. it's interesting and new to learn new vocabulary that can describe words that we use but never knew about.
